- Freeing Refrains

Freeing Refrains is a communal storytelling and conversation space where we hold the questions of “What binds us?” and “What liberates us?” with somatic intention, brave space invitations, gentle curious probing, and fierce beautiful truth.

Short History

In 2021, Freeing Refrains was an experimental solo venture, a prototype of the storytelling space imagined for Biracial & Rural, a community of care by, for, and with rural folks who experience a mixed cultural setting. Five out of the six gatherings were held specifically for BIPOC folks. One event was open to all. We learned a lot in this virtual space and knew we needed to continue playing with the concept.

In 2022, we are excited to hold more of these monthly conversations. This time Freeing Refrains is welcoming a guest storyteller to share an experience of what binds & liberates them. The invited audience will vary, sometimes open to all, and others by, for, and with other BIPOC folks.

This work has been made possible with support from the Rosy Simas Danse three thirty-one space artist in residency program.

Dig in Deeper
The current BnR dream is to come together in arts based retreats over the summer and continue the connection virtually over the winter. Retreats culminate with participants sharing their story at an Open Mic event to foster community dialogue. Read more at http://www.pointsoflightmusic.net/p/biracial-rural.html.
